While I have mixed feelings about Slim (more on that later), I think it is utilized perfectly in this song, and I love it. Dre, My Name Is is the world's introduction to Slim Shady. My Name Is: One of Eminem's most known songs, My Name Is was the lead single for the album. It's also the most realistic PSA as well, and the transition from this track to the next sound nice. In retrospect, it is probably my least favorite of the PSA skits, but that's mostly because the other ones are funnier, not that this isn't funny. Public Service Announcement (skit): This is a really funny skit. But does that make it a good album? Let's find out. As a result, the best way to approach The Slim Shady LP is to view it like an aural mutation on one of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead flicks: it's meant to jolt, jerk, and scare you a nasty, yet devilishly engaging slice of politically incorrect escapism that doesn't take itself too seriously. The Slim Shady LP is Eminem's first major label album and because of that he had a lot more tools to use than he did when he made his first album, 1996's Infinite. Eminem has ressurected the neo sub-genre of "horror-core" rap and given it a drug enhanced retro-fit. There's no doubt that many folks will balk at Eminem's vile linguistics, twisted outlook, and horror shop theatrics, but these folks will be missing the point. As if all of this weren't enough, the noteworthy "Just Don't Give A is somewhat historical in that it unites Eminem with his fellow (and equally twisted) Detroit rap compadre Kid Rock, who jumps behind the decks and provides the cuts and scratches that augment Em's nihilistic lyrics. As such there's the upbeat groove "Cum On Everybody," a track which is really a demented dance floor jammie in disguise. Slim Shady releases demented lyrics like "my mind won't work if my spine don't jerk" followed by an over-the-top chorus which exclaims "Now follow me and do exactly what you see/Don'tcha wanna grow up to be just like me?/I slap women and eat shrooms then O.D./Don'tcha wanna grow up to be just like me?" The music continues to keep in line with the almost cartoonish revelations that Em puts forth.

Likewise, "Role Model" presents an unrefutable case against any such thoughts, as Mr. But surface appearances can be deceiving, as the song ultimately possesses a Tales From The Crypt style twist(ed) ending. Perhaps the albums most stellar track, however, is "97' Bonnie & Clyde." On the surface this song appears to have Eminem delivering a loving tribute to his baby daughter, all the while surrounded by the lulling serenity of a super silky groove. Dre's beat is a lumbering slab of bass and piano minimalism that expertly compliments the bugged out storyline. This is followed by "Guilty Conscience," a multi-level song which begins with a unique twist on the standard stick-up story, Eminem debating with his conscience over whether or not to rob a liquor store. Dre that ends up propelling Eminem's lyrics into the stratosphere.

After a fitting "Public Service Announcement" warning of Eminem's devious lyrical nature and perhaps slightly unhinged mental stamina, things jump into high gear with "My Name Is," a tweaked, rolly-polly groove supplied by Dr. Although his staggered cadence and whiny, nasal timbre begin to make your head spin after a few tracks, the beats and rhymes are more than ample, creating an intoxicating ambiance which relentlessly grips you from start to finish.

Coming forth with a vocal quality which is best described as a demented cross between License to Ill-era Beastie Boys and Kool Keith on a bad day, Eminem delivers twisted verse after twisted verse like an apocalyptic cartoon character on massive hallucinogens. Damn! That's the first clean, Parental Advisory acceptable word that pops into mind in regards to the contents of Eminem's third release (he previously dropped an independent album and an EP in his native Detroit).
